Overview

The Red Sea is a significant marine inlet of the Indian Ocean, strategically positioned between Africa and Asia. Spanning approximately 438,000 square kilometers, it stretches about 2,250 kilometers in length and reaches a maximum width of 355 kilometers. Its connection to the wider ocean is through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait in the south, while to the north, it branches into the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba, leading to the crucial Suez Canal. Underlain by the Red Sea Rift, a geological feature part of the Great Rift Valley, the sea boasts a rich biodiversity with over 1,000 invertebrate species and 200 types of coral, despite its average depth of 490 meters and a maximum of 2,730 meters. This unique ecosystem and its pivotal location have made it a historical nexus for trade, migration, and cultural exchange for millennia.
